The beginning

Map of Mozambique -- I lived near the central Mozambican port city named Beira. The town I was in is called Dondo. Beira is famous because it is the port that supplies Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. Consequently, the AIDs rate is extremely high along the main highway.

Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world and it also has one of the highest AIDs rate in the world (ranked number 10, see http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/mz.html). The civil war 15 years ago killed 1 million people, wiping out a whole generation. Yet, despite all of the horrible statistics and bad news, Mozambique is a wonderful country with amazing people.
